Creating a Syllabus

A successful class starts with a clear, concise, and complete syllabus. The U of A Undergraduate Course Syllabus Policy is the best place to start. Additionally, we have compiled a syllabus checklist with more detailed guidelines.

  • Use 1st and 2nd person point of view--YOU, I, WE pronouns instead of "The student"
  • When creating your lesson plans, try to work backwards. Start with the intended learning outcome and build up to that point by asking how those outcomes can best be achieved. The learning outcome must be a measurable condition.
  • It is important to have clearly defined Rubrics to assess learning outcomes with essays, presentations, research papers, etc., or anything without obvious right/wrong answers. If you aren't familliar with Rubrics, there are many books and online resources available. The following book is a good introductory text on the subject and should be available at the U of A bookstore:

Stevens, Dannelle and Levi, Antonia. (2005) Introduction to Rubrics : An assessment tool to save grading time, convey effective feedback and promote student learning. Sterling, VA: Stylus Publishing.
